One Fact. Two Conclusions. An Example of Our Divided Society

I could almost predict the reactions to my Facebook post.

It was simple, to the point and unambiguous. And most importantly factual.

The post, in its entirety, was simply, “Reuters is reporting that nearly 100,000 migrants were detained at the U.S.-Mexico border in February. That’s the highest number for that month in 15 years.”

I tend to post news flashes with no commentary. It’s up to the reader, I figure, to decide how important the information is and how to process it.

Of course, we all process information from our individual points of view.

I commented to some friends that Democrats and Republicans will view this post from different prisms. Democrats may argue that the story is an indication the Biden administration is doing a great job catching people sneaking into the nation. Republicans, I proposed, might say it’s proof that now that Biden is president the floodgates are opening and people are streaming to the border.

How right I was.

“So much for the ‘open borders’ accusation we hear from the right wing every day,” commented one Biden supporter.

“Well hell yes,” responded a Republican. “Open border folks are back in charge. It’s like an invitation to invade.”

“Except that they were detained, genius,” a Democrat responded.

Prompting the Republican to write, “They are flooding here because … the open borders group are back in the White House.”

And so forth. You get the idea.

One fact. Not disputed.

Two conclusions.

Priceless.
