The Pressure Is On. Can Cuomo Survive?
Can a governor who is urged to resign by the state senate majority leader who is a member of his own party survive?
New York’s Andrew Cuomo is the latest and perhaps best example of how easy it is to fall from hero to zero. When the pandemic hit, his news conferences, which provided the best information to date, were considered must watch events by people, not just in New York, but across the country as well. In fact, his influence was felt well beyond the borders of the United States. For example, I received inquiries from friends in Europe and Asia asking me about Cuomo. They were fans.
Clearly they weren’t the only ones. His performances at his news conferences actually earned him an Emmy. And he found time in the middle of the pandemic to write a book which, of course, promoted himself as a great governor leading his state through the pandemic.
He seemed politically bullet proof. No one believed any candidate, Democrat or Republican, could seriously challenge him. My New York Republican friends were resigned to what they thought was the ‘’fact” that he’d run for re-election … and handily win.
But then, things started unraveling. After he authorized transferring COVID patients from hospitals to nursing homes, ostensibly to relieve the hospitals from overcrowding at the height of the pandemic.
